The Penitentiary stood bordered by the Watchman’s towers and contained a mess room, library, Catholic chapel, workshops and ablutions complex. The building was gutted by fire in 1897 but lay dilapidated until a resolute conservation program began sometime in the 1960s.

The ‘separate prison’ is cruciform-shaped, with all four wings comprised a central corridor fringed by rows and rows of isolated confinement cells. Thick sandstone walls separated them as it was anticipated that the contemplative silence and separation would do the convicts some good, and have an overall beneficial result.

A number of distinct gardens can be explored within this entrancing site, including the renovated Commandant's Garden which was originally planted in the 1850s. The reconstructed Government Gardens, are gorgeous and formal. Don’t forget to check out the garden’s delicately designed fences and luscious plantings.

The old hospital included interesting artefacts, like: wards, a kitchen, baking room, laundry and morgue. It was staffed by one doctor and a number of untrained convict ward-persons. Learn about how Port Arthur’s convicts laboured in heavy industries such as timber-getting (victims of accidents were common inmates at the hospital).
